QUESTION: I am a first time female car buyer - can you give me some advise that will keep the car sales people from taking advantage of me?
July 26, 2005
Hello Tony
First and foremost, thank you for the valuable information you provide on your web site. It is very helpful.
I am looking to purchase a car for the first time. I hear that when women buy cars the salesmen are extremely aggressive, and I'm not looking forward to that. Is there any advice you could give me so that my experience is not so traumatizing?
Also, my job requires me to drive quite a bit. Is it best to buy or lease?
Thank you,
Jess
Answer:
Hi Jess,
Thanks for the kind words about my website.
OK . . . first, if you put a lot of miles on a car stay away from leasing. With most leases if you drive more than 10,000 to 12,000 miles a year you will be penalized for any additional miles, and it can add up to quite a bit.
As far as buying a car goes some sales people will treat you professionally and with respect, while others will see you as a big fat commission in their pocket.
Unfortunately, there are some salesmen who still think they can take advantage of women car buyers, especially inexperienced buyers.
If you take your time and use your head you'll be able to tell when you run into a good sales person. Don't forget, you always have the option to terminate the negotiation by walking out.
You are always in control . . . unless you allow the dealer to have control. It's up to you.
Don't give them any deposit until after the deal is agreed upon by both sides, and don't give up your drivers license or keys to your trade unless you are sure you can get them right back. They can use your deposit, drivers license or keys to keep you from leaving.
Go to my website and read the info at: First Steps. Just follow these guidelines and you should do just fine.
If you suspect the sales person is trying to pull a fast one on you just leave. There are plenty of other dealers out there who will welcome your business.
Here is some interesting info regarding women car buyers.

Good luck!
