Question: I need to buy a decent used car, but I don't know where to start. Can you help me on this?

Hi Tony
I am in need of a decent used car and I really do not know where to begin. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money but I do need a good and reliable car.
I am from the Jersey City, NJ area and want to know if you could help me on this?
Martha
Answer:
Hi Martha,
I am not affiliated with any car dealers, so I cannot recommend any specific places for you to go.
What you need to do is to determine how much you can afford to spend and what kind of a vehicle you're interested in. You can shop car lots, looking and asking questions.
The car sales people will try to talk you into buying from them on the spot, but all you have to tell them is that you are shopping and getting some ideas. Tell them you are not ready to buy just yet. Take someone with you for moral support if at all possible.
Don't give the car sales person the keys to your trade if you have one, and don't give them any money or your social security number. Remember, you're just looking at this stage. Don't allow them to pressure you into anything. If things get too uncomfortable simply leave.
Also check the classified ads in your local newspaper. You may spot something interesting being sold by a private owner. Visit the following pages on my website among others for additional tips on buying a car:

Remember Martha, when buying a used car you never know for sure what you're getting, so take your time and check the car out very thoroughly.
All my very best...
