Question: Should I consider buying a new car that has had the bumper replace due to it being damaged?
December 28, 2005
Hi Tony
I was planning on buying a new car this morning after talking to the dealership last night on the phone. I negotiated with a few different car dealers, and got the dealer that I ended up planning to buy the car from to give me a pretty good deal.
So I went this morning to buy the car and the salesman showed me that he just put a dent in the bumper when driving the car from getting it washed.
I wasn't too happy about it as I found it kind of hard to believe. He said that he could have it replaced by tonight, but I walked away.
My question is that should I consider buying the car with the replaced bumper? Does it do anything to the value of the car? It seems like replacing a bumper is a pretty easy fix, but I'm unsure if I should still buy the car.
What do you think? If you think I should go for it, but ask for a lower price, how much off do you think I should ask?
Thank you Tony!

Answer:
Hi Eddie,
Maybe they can replace the bumper without consequence . . . maybe not. What if they scratch the paint putting it on, or leave it loose or misaligned or whatever.
I know this sounds paranoid, but I've seen little things like
this turn into big messes many times before.
You're buying a new car. You shouldn't have to settle for
one that has been repaired before you ever take it off the
lot. If it was me I'd insist on another car. If they can't
produce one go somewhere else.
I know it sounds hard, but you've got to look out for
yourself. The car dealers do not have your best interest at
heart . . . unfortunately.
All my very best...
